As you know, I’m a big fan of
the vintage Minolta lenses that I sell in my store. But you can’t buck progress
and these Sony lenses are newer, well built, and offer excellent value!
This is a lightly used Sony
Alpha “DT 3.5-5.6/18-55 SAM II” zoom lens in like new, mint condition. (S/N 20329xx)
This Sony Alpha mount lens will require an adapter
for use with Sony E mount cameras.
This upgraded and updated
version of the original SAL1855 sports a more rugged build, and the use of SD glass
improves some imaging characteristics over the original version of the lens.
Caps
included.
Build and cosmetics are all unmarked
and essentially new. This zoom is the latest incantation of a kit lens and is sold
with Sony Alpha a58 and a65 cameras. It is a nice upgrade over the original
18-70mm and 18-55mm zooms that Sony used to sell.
Optically, the glass is clean
and free of scratches, blemishes and cleaning marks. Pristine. No haze, dust,
or fungus inside the lens either. The rear element is perfect.
The built-in SAM (Smooth
Autofocus Motor) is a little bit quieter than the standard screw drive
Minoltas, and about the same speed. The lens is lighter in weight, made mostly
with polycarbonate and glass materials (versus the die-cast and metal of the
Minolta vintage models), and the rear mount is polycarbonate. I prefer the
stainless mount of a Minolta lens, but this mount is durable under normal use
and an 18mm field of view at this price is otherwise unobtainable.
Image quality of this lens is
likely on par with the vintage Minoltas, although most vintage lenses stop out
at f/3.5-4.5 rather than 5.6. On the plus side, at 18mm, you get a decent wide
angle in this lens for under $100, no easy accomplishment.

The grading of equipment is very subjective, but I try to estimate condition conservatively.
