Beautiful Majolica Character Jug “Peter Gerney” - name on base

It is very solid with minimal chips or flea bites.  Look closely at the photos.  If you collect items of this sort you will certainly want to add it to your collection.  I have only seen one other jug like this in the past and it had a different name on the base and was not as clear to read.  This jug (and the other one I found) is not signed or stamped with any identification

Where the name Peter Gerney comes from:  Widecombe Fair", also called "Tom Pearce" (sometimes spelt "Tam Pierce"), is a Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce, whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widocome with his friends.  Its chorus ends with a long list of the people travelling to the fair: "Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all." Some research suggests that the names originally referred to real people.

The song was published by Sabine Baring-Gould in the book Songs and Ballads of the West (1889–91) (referring to the West Country in England), though it also exists in variant forms.
