In 1773 Jacob Schweppes started selling carbonated water. Also known as Siphon bottles. These are glass bottles with a Siphon (the glass tube inside) that would dispense carbonated liquid which was usually water.  In some cases the bottle was pre-filled when purchased. Schweppes is a beverage brand that originated in the Republic of Geneva. Schweppes was one of the earliest forms of a soft drink.
