Hillman, founder and president of  Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, was one  of the more important labor leaders in U.S. history.

An  adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hillman was instrumental in shaping the New Deal and landmark labor legislation protecting workers’ rights and living standards.

He pioneered dispute resolution mechanisms that foreshadowed today’s grievance and arbitration procedures.

In part because of his efforts, political action and education became a priority within the labor movement.
