an
original 10” x 12” photo (25 cm x 30 cm)
“ Salisbury
Cath. (From Palace Grounds) H. Brooks ”
The photographer
could be either Henry Brooks, or his son Harry Brooks.
from on-line sources:
Henry Brooks was born at East Harnham, Wiltshire in 1825. He became a photographer around 1855. Getting more and more into painting, Brooks gradually
gave up photography and in 1881 he told the census enumerator that he was an
“Artist painter”. By about 1891 Henry’s photographic studio had been taken over
by his younger son Harry, twenty-nine. The 1901 census shows that Henry
Brooks was still living at 60 High Street where he is listed as an “Artist,
Sculptor and Picture Restorer”. Postcards from the early 1900s show the
sign H. Brooks, Picture Restorer & Picture Frame Maker.
CONDITION
This
authentic early photograph is in good condition, with some flaws of note.
There is an edge tear at upper left – about
2” long, taped on back side.
There
is a small ‘punch’ tear at far lower right.
See detail in image below - center/bottom.
The
contrast and resolution of the photo are very good.
The
photo would frame beautifully.
