VINTAGE JAPANESE BOOK

A charming Japanese book bought in an antiquarian bookshop in Tokyo specialising in calligraphy. The title translates to 'Stone Gate Inscription’. Most of the book is dedicated to photographs of letter carvings in the stone. After that there is a section in which the photographed writings were being analysed.

The book is a lovely example of Japanese traditional four-hole binding (yotsume toji), the simplest and in my view the most elegant form of classic Japanese stab binding technique (fukuro toji). This binding style was partially popular during the Edo period in Japan 1603–1867.

The book has 96 pages and lovely, tactile blue fabric covers with contrasting orange title strip. 21 x 30 cm approx (A4 format roughly). Printed in Japan.

Very good+ condition: Just a hint of surface wear to covers only; internally clean, bright and tightly bound. No annotations, tears etc.
