The 1940 Gum, Inc. The Lone Ranger R83 set consists of 48 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/8", and displaying amazingly detailed and colorful drawings of the Masked Man’s many heroic adventures. The set is considered one of the most popular of all nonsports entries. In addition to an action scene, each card front carries copyright information that is repeated on the reverse. The back also carries text describing the action. Without debate, the most elusive segment of this set are the high numbered cards (#s 37-48), possibly the result of a reduced printing run, with the scarcest entries being #37 (“His Father’s Son”) and the final card in the set, #48 “Silver’s Vigil.” Their rarity is matched only by the set's first card – “A Silver Bullet Stops A Hanging” – which, do its placement, regularly suffers a myriad of condition flaws.
