L&M PORSCHE 917/10-003 1972 Can-Am Champion 2012 Mecum Monterey Auction Catalog
Large-format (8 1/2 x 11”) auction catalog supplement for the L&M Porsche 917/10-003 Spyder that took the 1972 Can-Am championship. The historic racing car was offered for sale at the Mecum Monterey auction in August 2012. Catalog is in excellent condition, save for a bit of edge wear. (Inside photos are from our library copy.)
The 917—billed as the “world’s most recognized Porsche 917”—was undeniably the star of the show. The championship-winning car, which was driven by both Mark Donohue and George Follmer during the 1972 Can-Am Season, took the checkered flag at 5 of the 9 series races that year. On the auction block, it took another “first,” as a packed house cheered it on to a $5.5 million bid ($5.83 million including commission), which earned the 917/10 top honors in the sale and shattered the record auction price for a Porsche. That record had been set earlier in the year at Gooding’s Amelia Island auction when a 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder sold for $4.4 million.
The catalog supplement, written by racing driver Stephen Cox, details the storied history of this car and the Penske team’s up-and-down 1972 season, which proved that grit, determination, and stubbornness—and a fantastically engineered car—could unseat the dominant McLaren team. 95 pages of beautiful modern and vintage photography, fascinating text, and the car’s race history. Perfect-bound book measures approximately 8.5" x 11" (22 x 28).
