the book "Shiko Munakata Exhibition: Works Commemorating the Order of Cultural Merit"
Shiko Munakata was an artist who began with oil paintings and later transitioned to printmaking.
He carved his own unique world into woodblocks and called his
prints "itabokuga" instead of the traditional term "hanga".
His free-spirited works have left a deep impression on people's hearts,
expressing the strength and beauty of human life.
Munakata
believed that it was important to treat the nature of the wood with care, and
used the character "ita" (板) to emphasize this.
This term was used by
Edo-period woodblock artists and "itamotos" (woodblock printers), and
Munakata, as a woodblock artist, used the term "itabokuga" to refer
to his work.
In contrast to
traditional Japanese colored woodblock prints, Munakata applied colors to his
black and white woodblock prints to make
them more vivid. Initially, he applied
colors on the surface of the woodblock, but later adopted the technique of
"urazaishiki"
(coloring from the back of the paper) which he learned
from Soetsu Yanagi.
This technique allowed for more freedom in coloring without
obscuring the woodblock lines.
This book
includes 31 woodblock prints, 19 "wa-e" (Japanese-style paintings),
10 calligraphy pieces, and
a brief biography of Shiko Munakata.
Published by Asahi Shimbun in 1971, the book measures 24.3 x 25 cm
The back cover has some wear, scratches, and fading due to aging, but the contents are in good condition
with no writing, fold marks, stains or stains.
