Première édition in 12 en français, après l'édition in Folio, parue chez le même éditeur en 1729.
Il existe à la même date une édition bien plus courante à Amsterdam chez Herman Uitwerf.
Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), fit partie, en tant que physicien, de l'ambassade de la Compagnie des Indes au Japon.
Il resta deux ans à Nagasaki où il étudia d'une manière approfondie l'histoire, la géographie, les moeurs et la flore du Japon.
Pendant plus d'un siècle, son livre fut la seule source sur le Japon accessible aux occidentaux.

Three12mo (164x97 mm), (2)-lxx-(2)-312 / (6)-416 / (4)-379-(17) pages, one frontispiece and 13 plates.
Contemporary full tan polished calf, gilt flat spine, title and volume number in gilt on lettering-pieces, red edges, marbled endpapers. Caps a little chipped, binding with stains. Spines rubbed. Minor foxing.
First 12mo french edition, after one Folio (1729).
There is an other more current edition, printed at Amsterdam (Herman Uitwerf), also in 1732.
This work, has long been recognized as the most authoritative account of Japan.
