African Tribal Box Carved Wood Kuba Tukula Box Congo Ngongo Box Crescent Shaped With Lid

Tukula is the product of grinding African sandalwood or Pterocarpus soyauxii powder, used dry or mixed with oil for application. To the Kuba people of the Congo it is an immensely valuable substance. Tukula is both auspicious and prophylactic. Its earthy or purplish red color is used abundantly in decoration, both cosmetic and ritual.


Lidded boxes such as these functioned as storage vessels for Tukula. This traditional wooden container. It is uniquely hand carved.

It is vintage circa 1960’s and it measures 11” x 6” and 3.5” tall including the lid.

It is in excellent condition, please see pictures as they are part of the description.  Ask any questions you may have.
