The 1 oz Gold Eagle coin is one of the most popular coins for investing. The Gold coin is produced at the United States Mint. This 1 ounce Gold coin offers a timeless symbol of freedom and liberty in a classic size.

1 oz Gold Eagle Coin Design

The United States Mint created the American Eagle bullion program in 1986, launching coins in Gold and Silver. The Mint releases a new version of the Gold Eagle coins and Silver Eagle coins every January, each updated with the year of issue.

The 1 ounce Gold Eagle coin design brings historical designs from the early 1900s. The coin's obverse design is the same design that first appeared on the $20 Saint-Gauden's Liberty Gold coin in 1907. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Roosevelt, the depiction of Lady Liberty is considered to be one of the most beautiful coin designs in the world, and a representation of freedom and progress. The design features Lady Liberty holding a flaming torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left. The text, LIBERTY is displayed at the top of the coin. The United States Capitol dome appears in the background, along with sun rays.

The reverse design of the Gold Eagle (2021 and prior) features a bald eagle landing on its family's nest, holding an olive branch in its talons. The mother bald eagle is depicted sitting in the nest, guarding their eaglets, representing unity. The reverse was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter, and designed by Miley Busiek Frost. For the American Eagle's 35th anniversary, the US Mint released a new reverse coin design on the Gold Eagle coin. Called by many as the Type 2 design, the new reverse design features a close-up of a bald eagle. Jennie Norris designed the reverse, and it was sculpted by Renata Gordon. The coin also includes new features added for additional security.

With the 1 oz Gold Eagle coin being 22k (0.9167) fine Gold, it weighs slightly more than 1 troy ounce with added alloys of copper and silver mixed in. The addition of the alloys gives the coin more durability than if it was 24k (0.999+) fine Gold.
