Description

About This Items
Ise katagami is a traditional craft in which persimmon tannin is applied to durable and long-lasting Mino washi paper. Multiple layers of paper, typically 3 to 4 sheets, are glued together in a way that alternating vertical and horizontal fibers increase its strength. Afterward, persimmon tannin is applied again and allowed to dry, creating a base paper known as "katagami." Careful carving of kimono patterns and designs onto this paper results in the stencil used for dyeing fabric. In 1983, it was designated as a Traditional Craft (Tool) of Japan under the name "Ise katagami."
