Since this occasional series began 13 years ago, group soul has become an increasingly collectable genre. Its popularity has long since spread beyond those doo wop fans who first started to declare an interest when the 1950s rarities they originally coveted became too expensive to afford without a lottery win.

Once again Ady Croasdell and I have combed all sorts of catalogues to bring you a satisfying selection of vocal group sounds. Our regular mix of name acts and complete obscurities always seems to hit the spot, and we are confident will again be the case here. The majority of our selections are making their CD debut and it’s always pleasing to include an unissued track or two – this time we’ve unearthed nine world premieres.

Californiais represented by Vernon Green & the Medallions, the Turn Arounds, the San Francisco TKOs, Choice Of Colors and many others of highly commendable status. Detroit and Chicago weigh in with the Webb People, Brothers Of Soul, the Smith Brothers and the Steelers, to name just a few. Group soul on the East Coast comes to you courtesy of New Jersey’s Pretenders, while our excursions to the south have yielded buried treasure in the shape of previously unissued goodies from Alabama’s Bobby Moore & the Rhythm Aces and Memphis’ Mad Lads and Del-Rios featuring future Ovations frontman Louis Williams. We also have Special Delivery from Washington DC, Ohio’s Imaginations and more good stuff from all over the USA.
