This listing is for a beautiful example of an original WWII era German leather coat. These leather coats were not mass manufactured pieces of uniform, but rather were private purchase pieces worn by certain Wehrmacht officers and other high ranking officials (see photo).

I have done a lot of research on coats of this era and based on my investigations this particular coat appears to be made by the same company as the one in the period photo. From this I can establish that this coat was manufactured in the 1930’s (possibly late 1920’s or early 1940’s).

Based on the weight and feel of the leather I would say that the coat is made of horsehide. This is noticeably heavier and thicker than modern fashion leathers, these coats were designed to hold up to heavy usage. The black colour has developed a beautiful patina over time and is browner in the areas of higher wear, most modern leathers are dyed uniformly throughout and cannot achieve this patina. Inside, the coat is lined in brown cotton moleskin and has rubbed inside cuffs to prevent the wind blowing up the wearer’s sleeves.

Unusually, the belt appears to be the original. Most coats of this age have long since been separated from their original belts and have much more modern ones attached.

Based on the fit, the coat is around a size large. The measured-half chest is approximately 22.5 inches and the sleeve length is 25.5 inches. These correspond with a 40-42 inch chest for the wearer.
