CENTURY by HOMER LAUGHLIN

VINTAGE c. 1934

FRUIT DECAL SERVING TRAY / PLATTER

Homer Laughlin China Company

Made in the United States of America

Gently used and in great condition for an item almost a century old!

Popular century shape by the Homer Laughlin China Company (Newell, West Virginia) was developed in 1930 and introduced at trade shows in Cleveland and Pittsburgh in 1931.  The style was produced until around the late 1940's and were initially produced with a uranium enriched vellum glaze.

The tray is stamped "Second Selection" on the back, meaning the piece did not fit the schematic required for first quality.  The HLC Homer Laughlin backstamp has worn away substantially but can still be vaguely seen above the Second Selection marking.  While the backstamp numbering would have nailed down a specific year of production, the style of the Second Selection stamp helps narrow the item down to the early 1930's, most likely 1934.

The tray measures approximately 12 inches side to side, 9 inches top to bottom, and sits approximately an inch high.  It weighs roughly 2 pounds, 7.5 ounces by itself.

There are a few areas of utensil marks and general wear, but taking into account the age of this item, it is in very good condition!  Pictures #12-13 show some very minute pitting/utensil marks around the fruit decal.  Pictures #14-19 show additional utensil marks and stray spots of wear throughout the piece.  Pictures #21-22 show wear marks on the underside of each handle.  By no means a mint condition item, but still remarkably nice considering the tray is approaching 100 years old!
