One of two similar instruments that I presently have available on eBay is this superb quality French-made stereo graphoscope dating to around 1875, suitable for magnifying Cartes Postales and viewing stereo photographs in glorious three dimensions!

The instrument comprises a hinged viewing platform with fretwork stand bearing the maker's mark, a large swing out frame with a 6" magnifying lens for viewing postcards and twin eyepieces below for stereo work. It is particularly suitable for viewing glass stereopositives, with hinged flaps forming a darkened enclosure to reduce light ingress, thereby improving the clarity of the viewed image.  This is a relatively sophisticated arrangement, only seen on the better, more expensive stereo graphoscopes.  The viewing platform can be set to various angles according to the individual needs of the user.  When viewing Carte Postales, the image is placed in the groove provided, with the slide carrier being moved backwards and forwards to achieve precise focusing adjustment.  For stereowork, the subject is placed in the groove and the slide carrier brought right up against the enclosed viewing chamber.  Then, fine focusing is achieved by turning the thumbscrew at the front which operates a wormgear, moving the eyepieces backwards and forwards.  Card-backed stereoviews can also be used, by opening the hinged and mirrored flap to allow light to enter through the top of the viewing chamber.  The entire instrument folds flat for ease of storage when not in use.  The sale includes the decoratively embossed brass-framed glass stereopositive, as illustrated.  These instruments are tremendous fun, delivering an astonishing three dimensional effect that really brings history to life.  The illusion is achieved by bringing together two almost identical photographs, each taken from a slightly different angle.

This is quite a large example, measuring 48cm long, 28cm wide and 58cm maximum height when in use, folding down to 15cm when not in use.  The magnifying lens measures 6” in diameter.

Condition:  The instrument is finished in a beautiful close-grained veneer which retains its original French Polish with excellent  colour and shine, despite its considerable 150 years or more of age.  There are minor scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use and a couple of small losses to the veneer, as illustrated.  There is also an old but well-executed repair adjacent to one of the hinges, again as shown in the images.  All lenses are in good order with only very minor surface marks and scratches.  The focusing adjustment operates correctly, with slight slippage to the worm gear. The glass image is in good order.
