·      The book was a commercial success and became one of the best-selling books of 1953. It tells the story of enlisted men, specifically Marines, at the beginning of World War II. The characters in the book come from various backgrounds and cover a broad range of American archetypes1. The novel focuses on their interaction as they learn to put aside their prejudices and biases to bond and develop esprit de corps.

 

The story is largely told from the viewpoint of the Battalion Communications Chief, “Mac,” although it frequently shifts to third person in scenes where Mac is not personally present1. Other notable characters include Daniel “Danny” Forester, an All-American boy from Baltimore; Lamont Quincy “L.Q.” Jones, the unit’s clown; Constantine “Ski” Zvonski, a street youth from Philadelphia; Marion “Sister Mary” Hodgekiss, a small-town boy and the unit’s intellectual; Cyril “Seabags” Brown, a farm boy from Iowa; Mortimer “Speedy” Gray, a cowboy type from Texas; Andrew “Andy” Hookans, a lumberjack from Washington; and Shining Lighttower, a Navajo Native American.
