Papworth embarked on several sketching tours of the British Isles during the 1960s and 1970s. He documented the beauty of the British landscape in a post-war era when the foreign travel industry was booming. Papworth finds delight in the picturesque mountains, lakes, fells, dales and vales of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Cumbria, Scotland and Wales. He also explores Devon and Cornwall’s coastal views, villages and harbours, as well as rural churches and castles. Working in gouache and pastel, his works are vigorous, expressive and vibrant, charting the consistent beauty in the landscape throughout changing weather and seasons.
