A Late 18th or early 19th century New England ladder back chair.
The chair is a real “Country” piece having an unusual placement of three bowed slats
And crudely turned finials. Constructed with Pegged joints.
The woven splint seat is old and is still holding up well for adult use!
Presumably RARE original finish, a subtle form of graining.
The chair was painted or stained red, and then a black paint or stain was applied over and wiped while wet, allowing the red color to come through in places. for a faux wood effect
Ca 1780-1820

While not the most sophisticated piece of furniture, country furniture like this is an important area of early American decorative arts. A simple turned chair like this was easier to produce and would be more affordable to families in the community.

The chair measures 18.25 inches wide x 15” deep x 35” tall with a seat height of 15 inches.
Weight: 7 lbs., 10 oz.

The condition is very good. Wear commensurate with age and use.
The chair presents as quite sturdy and is suitable for adult use.
