Offered for auction from a recent estate sale is a Wonderful and Beautiful Early set of 5 dishes as defined below
TRADEMARK ON BACK AS NOTED ABOVE AND IN PHOTOS.
This wonderful Vintage set of (WINTER MILL SCENE’S) which consists of 3 Tea Cup Sauces and 2 Desert or Salad Dishes has a small chip on one of the Desert/Salad dishes. There are no cracks on the dishes. All have light crazing. Crazing is in the glaze and is not detectable when one rubs his or her fingernail over the crazing. Art pottery crazing occurs during pottery production when the clay body and glaze cool at different rates as noted below. Each plate is white with a textured wave border. The dishes have a beautiful design on the interior bottom as photos will show. It consists of and Old Mill with Waterwheel, horse on bridge with sleigh, fence, stream and outer buildings in the winter. They appear to most likely never been used, if used very carefully and lightly considering its a vintage item before 1962 when Knowles ceased operation as noted below. The dishes were made in 1948 as noted above and are 75 years old from my research. Under a magnifying glass no utensil ware is present.
Below I have added information on the Edwin M. Knowles China Company, Photographs and the history of Crazing on pottery as noted in my ad.
As photos show I would consider these VINTAGE WINTER MILL SCENE dishes to be in very good to excellent condition as photos will show . Photos have been taken in direct sunlight out door, indoors on different backgrounds to show this Wonderful Vintage Winter, Mill, Horse & Sleigh on bridge dish set of 5 in various backgrounds. Please keep in mind that these plates are at least 75 years old. The may exhibit minor ware as I have tried to define above. Please view photos for condition.
Crazing is the fine crackling one often sees on many glazed pottery pieces and on certain types of antique porcelain. Crazing is in the glaze and is not detectable when one rubs his or her fingernail over the crazing. Art pottery crazing occurs during pottery production when the clay body and glaze cool at different rates. Crazing is a very common condition with virtually all glazed art pottery. Normal crazing or crackling that can not be seen at a few feet does not typically affect the value of most very high quality art pottery pieces. This information came from an article by Harry Rinkler titled “Dating China Heirlooms”
