Gilding on the spines slightly faded, otherwise beautiful copy.

This “extremely recommendable work and abundant in documents of all kinds” (Bourcard) is followed by “Research on the origin of cotton and linen paper, on calligraphy, on miniatures, on paper watermarks”. It also contains “Research on the origin of registers, signatures, advertisements and page figures” by G.-G. Magné de Marolles, a “Memoir on the origin of signatures and figures in typographic art” by MC de La Serna Santander and a “Notice on stereotype editions” by F. Schoell.
Original and even pioneering work, because it addresses major areas of the history of typography that were until then relatively neglected. Only edition of this precious treatise, which will inspire numerous researches throughout the golden century of bibliophily.
Hendrik Jansen
, born in The Hague, moved to Paris in 1770 where he worked as a translator before opening a bookstore and a printing house in 1791. In 1806 he became Talleyrand's librarian, to whom he dedicated this essay.
