This is one of several vintage metal mesh bags coming (most of the others seen in photo 14), and seems a late 1980s shape to me, though being made in China, maybe it's 90s or even Y2K era, hard to say. The quality is good, mesh very shimmery and an unusual size at 1/8" diameter each plaque. (Most metal mesh seems to be either the super-tiny micro mesh, like 2 mm, or larger 1/4" plates.) It's a structured design, it holds its rounded boxy shape, and has black piping at the edges. I can't tell if this trim is real leather or some very convincing black pleather. I think it's genuine leather as it has a grain to it...but I'm not 100% sure. The front external pocket closes with a magnetic snap button clasp, which type I think came into use in the 80s.
The Whiting and Davis brass charm is slightly tarnished which is just about the only thing I can find to show the age of this bag. It also has two white plastic stalks from some kind of paper tags it must have had, still attached to the inside zip pocket. It seems unused, lining clean and no signs of wear anywhere. The cloth tag is interesting too, of all the Whiting and Davis bags we have here it's the only one that gives a founding date, of 1876. I think those early mesh bags were a handmade chainmail made in precious metals, though, and tiny. Distant ancestors of this, which is a modern looking bag, especially being a cross-body type. I would say it's as nice as anything W&D is making now.
If I forgot anything, we're always happy to answer questions. And we have more vintage metal mesh bags coming.
