HI FELLOW COLLECTORS! IF YOU KNOW OF OR ARE LOOKING FOR OF ONE OF A
KIND OFFERINGS OF VINTAGE ROCK 'N ROLL RADIO SHOWS, HOSTED BY NATIONALLY KNOWN
DJ's, YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE.
DO YOU LOVE THE OLDIES FROM THE 60's AND 70's, IN A FIVE HOUR SPECTACULAR?
THESE ARE GREAT RADIO
SHOWS FROM THOSE VINTAGE YEARS OF RADIO SHOWS WHEN DJ'S WERE ALLOWED TO BE DJ'S
AND NOT JUST ROBOTS PLAYING 'MOST MUSIC', AND WHEN SHOWS HAD SPECIAL RARE
INTERVIEWS AND OFTEN FASCINATING THEMES, AND NOT JUST THE SAME MUSIC EVERY
HOUR, OVER AND OVER. YOU WILL LOVE NOT ONLY THIS SHOW BUT ALL THE SHOWS LISTED
BY KEITH'S KOLLECTABLES.
AND, THEY ARE RARE BUT HOW DO YOU DEFINE RARENESS?? LET ME TELL
YOU!
FIRST OF ALL THERE WERE NO MORE THAN 175 LP OR CD SETS OF EACH SHOW
PRESSED. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY WERE SENT ONLY TO THE AFFILIATE RADIO
STATION IN THE TOP 175 RADIO MARKETS IN THE COUNTRY AND ONLY ONE STATION IN
EACH MARKET COULD AIR THE SHOW.
STATIONS IN MARKETS BELOW THE TOP 175 (THERE ARE 306 MARKETS IN THE
UNITED STATES) HAD TO PRESENT THE SHOW THROUGH THE SATELLITE FEED OF THE SHOW
FROM THE SYNDICATOR OF THE SERIES)
AND, DUE TO CONTRACTUAL LEGAL OBLIGATIONS, EACH RADIO STATION WAS ALLOWED
TO AIR EACH SHOW EXACTLY ONCE AND NO MORE.
SO, MOST RADIO STATIONS JUST THREW THEM AFTER AIRING SINCE THEY WERE
USELESS TO THE STATION AFTER AIRING. THERE IS NO TELLING HOW MANY OF EACH
SHOW SURVIVED.
WHO KNOWS - THIS COULD BE THE ONLY ONE. AND YOU MAY WELL BELIEVE THIS WHEN I LATER DESCRIBE THE SHOW.
WELCOME EVERYONE TO KEITH'S KOLLECTABLES, ONE OF EBAY'S PREMIERE

LET ME FIRST DESCRIBE THIS CLASSIC SHOW FROM THE BASEMENT HALL OF FAME COAST TO COAST WITH TOM KENT AND THEN IF YOU DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT RADIO SHOWS, PLEASE READ ON FOR MY BRIEF 'RADIO SHOWS 101' DESCRIPTION AND HOW I GOT INTO COLLECTING SOME 35 YEARS AGO.
AS THE TITLE SUGGESTS, IT SPENDS FIVE (COUNT 'EM!) HOURS PLAYING MUSIC FROM THE FABULOUS EARLY ROCK ERA OF THE 60'S AND EARLY 70'S, LARGELY BY REQUEST BECAUSE IT WAS BROADCAST LIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND DISTRIBUTED TO AFFILIATE STATIONS ON CD IF THEY WERE UNABLE TO BRODCAST THE LIVE FEED FOR WHATEVER REASON.
IT WAS HOSTED BY TOM KENT AND IN A FORMAT SIMILAR TO THE COUNTRY TRUCKERS RADIO SHOWS FROM THE EARLY 50s ON BROADCAST FROM THE CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY SO TRUCKERS DRIVING ALL NIGHT HAD A FRIEND TO LISTEN TO EVERY NIGHT TO ENTERTAIN THEM, PLAY THEIR MUSIC, AND KEEP THEM AWAKE.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW, 'CLEAR CHANNEL' STATIONS WERE VARIOUS AM STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MOST HIGH POWER (50,000 WATTS) AND THEIR NIGHTTIME SIGNAL REACHED HUNDREDS OF MILES DUE TO AM RADIO SIGNALS BOUNCING OFF THE IONOSPHERE AT NIGHT AND COMING BACK TO EARTH SOMETIMES MANY HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY FROM THE STATION.
CLEAR CHANNEL STATIONS WERE DESIGMATED SUCH BY THE FCC BACK IN THE OLD DAYS WHEN MANY RURAL AREAS DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO LOCAL RADIO SO THEY COULD USUALLY LISTEN TO ONE OF THE CLEAR CHANNEL STATIONS AND BE INFORMED AND ENTERTAINED.
OTHER RADIO STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ON THE SAME FREQUENCY HAD TO GO OFF THE AIR AT SUNSET OR LOWER THEIR POWER AT NIGHT AND OFTEN HAVE MULTIPLE TOWERS SO THEIR SIGNAL COULD ONLY GO IN CERTAIN DIRECTIONS AND A CERTAIN DISTANCE SO AS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE CLEAR CHANNEL STATIONS SIGNALS.
FOR EXAMPLE, I WORKED AT A 5000 WATT AM STATION WITH THE SIGNAL GOING 360 DEGREES BUT AT NIGHT WE HAD TO GO TO 1000 WATTS AND ON TWO TOWERS INSTEAD OF OUR MAIN DAYTIME OMNI DIRECTIONAL TOWER SO THAT THE SIGNAL FROM THE TWO TOWERS BLOCKED OUT EACH OTHER IN THE DIRECTION OF THE CLEAR CHANNEL STATIONS.
FOR US, THOSE STATIONS WERE IN MIAMI AND ATLANTA.
SO WHAT TOM KENT DID WITH HIS SHOW WAS TO BROADCAST LIVE ON AM & FM DEPENDING ON THE STATION AFFILIATE.
AND INSTEAD OF A ONE HOUR, TWO HOUR OR THREE HOUR SHOW LIKE MOST RADIO SHOWS, HE BROADCAST FOR FIVE HOURS EVERY NIGHT LIVE, TAKING REQUESTS AND DEDICATIONS.
SO FIGURE IT OUT. WE HAVE THREE TIME ZONES. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN IT IS 11 PM IN NEW YORK THE SHOW WOULD AIR FROM 11 PM - 2 AM. IN THE MIDWEST, IT WOULD BE 10 PM TILL 1 AM AND ON THE WEST COAST IT WOULD BE FROM 8 PM UNTIL 11 PM, AND ALL LIVE
IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE
MOST POPULAR RADIO SHOW DEVOTED TOTALLY TO A BROAD SPECTRUM OF EARLY ROCK MUSIC
THAT WAS EVER AVAILABLE TO RADIO STATIONS. AND, NOW IT CAN BE YOURS.
This show aired on January 10, 2005 and was show #HOF011505-134
BELIEVE ME, YOU WILL EVEN ENJOY THE VINTAGE NATIONAL COMMERCIALS ON EACH SHOW. IT IS AMAZING HOW EVEN THE COMMERCIALS BRING BACK MEMORIES AFTER ALL THESE YEARS WHEN WE HATED THEM SO MUCH BACK THEN.
SO WHAT ARE THE BIG QUESTIONS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT
RADIO SHOWS?
LET ME TELL YOU BUT FIRST....
Allow me tell you my own personal story of discovering the wonder of
radio shows.
I discovered radio
shows quite by accident while reading one of my favorite (long since departed)
magazines called "Discoveries" (It was later bought by the same
company that publishes "Goldmine" which I personally always
considered a lesser publication, but that is another story.
This was before ebay became the driving force in radio show sales
(and everything else) in the later 1990's.
I was especially
attracted in "Discoveries" to a two page (or more) spread in each
issue by a guy called "The Old Hippie".
Let me tell you, the Old Hippie had it all. He was a real
pioneer. Way before anyone knew what radio shows even were let alone that
they could be bought as rarities, he had the market cornered.
Most shows that he advertised were way beyond my budget but I drooled
over those pages every issue and once in awhile I could afford one or
two.
Now, I have attempted in
my own humble way to take on the mantle of "The Old Hippie". I
have listed over 11,000 unique radio shows of all genres for you all to drool
over, and most at prices, hopefully, that collectors can better afford! I
want to make available to collectors what I could not afford and especially in
these days of higher prices and lesser availability.
Radio shows are harder and harder to find in quantity and the prices for
the ones still out there just go higher and higher as they disappear from the
market. However, because of my large presence on eBay, I am often
contacted with selling offers, some of which I take advantage of and some I
have to pass on because of the prices. I have found that by buying in bulk,
even when many or most of the shows are lesser known but still amazing shows, I
can offer the best prices on all titles.
And, even though I price all my shows so that I make very little on each
sale, most of which I use to buy more shows to make available to you, if you
find the price too high, let me know and we can likely work out something you
can afford. I want everyone to be able to have what they want for their
collection.
So, again, what
is a radio show?
Radio Shows
are syndicated productions provided to radio stations usually on what is called
a 'barter arrangement'. There were several large and small distributors
who supplied broadcast product to radio stations normally during weekends when
the usual air personalities have a break, although in recent years, through bigger
companies absorbing smaller ones and many going out of business because the
competition was just too fierce, there are only a few big syndicators
left. This is sad because it has led to more homogenization of different
formats and selection available for stations and often less creativity in the
shows.
Most aired on
Saturday or Sundays. They often feature some of the best known voices for
their genre from across the country thus the Dick Clark's and Casey Kasem's and
Rick Dees and Dick Bartley and so many others.
People collect them
for various reasons.
Some just
collect the series because they like it and want them all.
Some collect their
favorite artists or genre of music. Rather than an album by the artist or
a compilation downloaded through iTunes or wherever, they have a unique
presentation of their favorite artist or music not available anywhere else and
always with dj presentations which were very entertaining.
Some collect
interviews with their favorite artists as most shows had interview segments.
Some collect
commercials and as I said, even these old vintage commercials now bring back
memories.
Radio shows
were first distributed on reel to reel tape or on CD and even later (after 2000
for most shows) on CDR. Now they are not available at all to collectors
since they are distributed by digital download much like you get your music
from iTunes.
These shows
become rarer and rarer every day because the people who buy them hold on to
them.
The shows that you
get now and hold on to will never decrease in value and only increase. I
have prided myself since the start to provide the best and fairest cost with a
no holds barred guarantee that you will be happy or I refund your money.
I sell them for
near what I bought them for. I give volume discounts and discount postage
always. As the postal service increases their rates, my shipping rates
over the years has decreased.
And, I have one
of the biggest radio show libraries in the world consisting of over fifteen
thousand of shows, so many that I don't even know all that I have and am
sometimes amazed when I go to look for one show and find another that I did not
realize I had.
Finally,
it is Americana at its best. Whether the show be from the 60's or 2000's,
rock, countdown, oldies, country, classical, religious, jazz or big band, it is
unique and home grown.
And you just can't
find them anywhere.
Even record
stores that still exist will rarely have any.
Radio shows
are wonderful representations of the real golden age of radio at least music
wise. And every one you buy is an original, not a copy, not a
remake - all are limited editions. Once you get hooked, like me, it is a love
affair for life!
So, I hope you
will join me in this and many more wondrous voyages on the 'SS Keith's
Kollectables' as we take exciting journeys together exploring the treasures of
radio shows we grew up with and thought were long lost.
May the lost be
found!!
