Herman Melville, American novelist, was born in New York in 1819 and died there in 1891. From his early youth he led an exciting life. He sailed the southern seas, lived in Tahiti and the Sandwich Islands, where he had numerous adventures, and finally signed on as a sailor on an American warship. His first book, Typee (1844), made him famous. He then published further novels, including Omoo (1847) and Moby Dick (1851).
