Background

During the months of July to September in the central region of the Mexican State of Veracruz, patron saints are celebrated in folkloric dances whose origins can be traced back to colonial Mexico and Spanish influences. In pre-Hispanic times various indigenous peoples settled in Veracruz and over thousands of years their iden4ty based on the symbolic richness of their culture arose. The clown expresses joy, but with a touch of solemnity. He wears red piping in his costume to compliment the flowers from the altar of St Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of the town, whose feast day is celebrated in July.
