Gorgeous fire screen.

Highly detailed stylised flower Embroidery.

Wood surround, all together with signs of past use, scrapes, scratches and crack on one leg.

I would say embroidery is Arts & Crafts / Victorian in style.

Wear as shown commensurate with age, please enlarge all my photos to study condition.

A very beautiful screen. I don’t know why the back is so puffed out, always dreamt it might be stuffed with money😂. But probably just to protect the embroidery. Perhaps framed into glass by amateur? It’s backed with a burgundy colour velvet, which is harder in places than other areas. Looks like the finial on top is to pull out the embroidery or change it…..it is stuck if that’s the case, we’ve never had it out. If anyone knows drop me a message.

Photos can’t capture its beauty.

Gorgeous design, silk threads in the pattern of a cornucopia full of flowers and a little butterfly, with what looks like watercolour wash on the background. When we first acquired it I thought that perhaps the backing colour had run through, but was informed it’s supposed to be like that! I’m not sure, but we have lived with it like that and see it as part of its charm.

I have had this piece for many years, purchased as an antique firescreen, believed to be society silk, but cannot confirm this is the case. I’ve used it to put my bead necklaces on, as a decoration piece in our bedroom.

I think again, would best be used as decoration (and not firescreen) or it would make a good study piece for a textile enthusiast.

43” tall x just under 18" wide in total, from floor to top of the little knob on top.

Glassed area is 25” tall x 15” wide.

Embroidered area is 14” in height x 12.5” in width.

Our home is smoke free, and this has been kept in bedroom for about 25 years. Can’t say if it was used as a firescreen prior, but expect it was.

Collection only from TN31 area, near Rye, East Sussex. Cannot post/ship I’m afraid.

Thank you for looking.
