Set of 13 S J Addis woodcarving chisels/gouges.

This set have come from my great grandfather’s collection which has been passed down through generations.

It was chisels such as these he would have used when he worked for Harland & Wolff on the Titanic. At this time he was in charge of a gang which worked on the staircase and great hall of the Titanic. I have included a couple of photographs in listing which my grandfather gave to me from his time working on the ship. He told me that the one which includes him (the only one sitting) with 4 of his gang actually shows one of the test pieces he did for the newel posts of the grand staircase! I’m not even sure if this is true and these photos are the only ones I have from his time at Harland & Wolf so can’t corroborate this and is pretty much anecdotal in terms of identifying him as the master craftsman who worked on the great hall of the Titanic. (I can’t even identify which one he is on the group photo!)

This set would of course be worth a fortune if I could but it’s a nice bit of history all the same!

I would be happier if these went on to be used to carve again and is one of the reasons I am selling them as I intended to use some myself but have never managed to unfortunately. I am happy to answer any questions or provide more phots info etc if required. I am selling these as needing sharpening as people have differing opinions on whether chisels are sharpened/honed! They have been stored with the complete steel of chisels wax dipped (removed by me to sell) and the handles individually wrapped so are in as was condition. I will give a light museum wax all over before I post to whoever buys them unless buyer lets me know otherwise.

Thanks for looking and I will be listing more of his and my grandfathers chisels as well if anyone is interested.
