EARLY 1940s SWISS GILT-BRONZE DECO DESK / SHELF CLOCK
SOLD BY PRESTIGIOUS
BLACK, STARR & FROST GORHAM, NEW YORK
This handsome timepiece is from my personal collection of clocks curated since 1972. Commencing with apprenticeship to a European master clock and watchmaker through high school graduation, freshmen year of
college and remainder of the 1970s, I sensitively restored clocks of all
types; opening service and sales showrooms in the western suburbs of
Chicago. After a 35 year "sabbatical" pursuing an appraisal career, I've
returned to the venerable trade.
Concord (favored by Tiffany & Co.) along with Swiss competitors Imhof, Looping, Angelus and Luxor manufactured the
best jeweled lever alarm, desk and shelf clocks. This is a pre-WWII timepiece displaying exemplary design and workmanship.
Machined of solid bronze with fire-gilded finish. Stepped rectangular plinth supporting a central arch flanked by small arches beneath concentric rings framing the bezel with beveled edge. Two-tone silvered dial with engraved chapter ring having black minute indicies. Bold applied gilt-metal numbers and gilded stick hands easily read at a distance. Rear of case carries original owner's monogram.
High-grade eight-day Concord movement with 15-jewel lever escapement.
The clock presents handsomely and is in good operating order.
NOTE: I've not serviced the movement and cannot guarantee years of "maintenance free" enjoyment.
5.2" high, 4.9" wide, 1.6" deep
impressive 2.0 lbs.
