One of the oldest Distinctive Unit Insignia in the U.S. Army is the Army Medical Department Coat of Arms. It helps to appreciate the ancestry when we remember that the Medical Corps was established in 1775.
This is a framed Army Medical Department Embroidered Insignia. It is an embroidered piece that depicts the regimental coat of arms for the Army Medical Department. The detailed heavy embroidery is on a maroon background (in 1901 the AMEDD adopted the color maroon as representing the color of blood).
The Army Medical Department (AMEDD), formerly known as the Army Medical Service, was established in 1775 as the 'Army Hospital' to coordinate medical care for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The AMEDD is led by the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army.
The AMEDD is headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio Texas (where you can see the framing was done).
The regimental coat of arms was likely used beginning about 1918. The twenty white stars on a blue background and the red and white stripes represent the U.S. Flag of 1918. The green staff entwined with a green serpent symbolizes the rod of Ascelpius (symbolizing medicine and healing).
Both the frame and the embroidery are in good condition. The only damage is the frame paper on the back, where there is a small tear as shown.
