Of all of the photographs sold at auction by the Branch Rickey estate, this is the only one featuring Jackie Robinson (there certainly may be others that remain with Rickey's many descendants). The scene is Pratt Institute and the photographer Walter Civardi (founder and head of the photography department at Pratt. Between Rickey and Robinson is a young artist named Lyle Suter, a student of illustration who drew a scene representing "American Heritage" from the vantage point of the stands near first base at Ebbets with Jackie running to first. The fans are integrated, and Branch is pointing to a cheering black fan. The print has some condition issues, all clearly visible in the scan.

Together with another collector, I will be listing many of the most important vintage baseball photographs in existence. Taken together, this will constitute the most important offering of baseball photographs since the 1996 Christie's Baseball Magazine sale.
