For fireplaces that have an opening in the floor to dispose of ashes, a cast iron or steel cover is necessary to keep this opening covered. We have 4 different size covers for different size openings listed on eBay. Check them out, if this one does not look like it will work. Even then, you may find an opening a little too big for the ash dump door. In that case buy a small container of high-temp refractory or furnace cement and trowel a bit around the perimeter of the opening and squeeze the frame of the door into it, letting it dry before using it. Or if the opening is a little too small, you can chisel a little brick off on a side where it is too tight about a half inch deep. Don't worry about making a smooth line, as the frame will overlap the edge. Again you can apply a little refractory or furnace cement, if the fit is a little loose

This is the most commonly found ash dump door and several manufacturers make them in cast iron, though in this one, the door is hinged to the door frame (see 2nd photo), so there is no danger of the door falling out during use as with the Woodfield door we sell (along with all the other cast iron brands). Other brand doors can be detached from the frame just by twisting it slightly and lifting it out. This one is 14 oz. lighter and has a door that can only be detached by removing 2 cotter pins holding it to the frame hinge. Both the Woodfield and this door fit an opening 4 1/2" x 8 1/2", which is the exact size of a firebrick that has been left out to make this opening in the fireplace floor. The outer dimensions of this Ash Dump is 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" to create a 1/2" frame around it in case the opening is a little larger than a firebrick. This frame will then seal this extra space around it Both cast iron ash dumps have louvered doors that can be easily opened to sweep ash and debris into the opening and into the ashpit below without a mess.

After 43 years, we closed down our chimney sweep business and a year later are selling all our brand new inventory for 50-75% off wholesale list prices. We are much cheaper than most others on eBay, as we are not trying to make a profit, but need to clear out our inventory for good at a loss. Once one of our listings is sold out, it is gone for good. We were a service business, so we don't mind answering any technical or aesthetic questions about these products and how they work. Check out our other listings for chimney and fireplace inventory and tools and if you don't see something you want, contact us through eBay. We have so much stuff, we may not have had time to list it yet on eBay.
