The Last Supper
By Burt Payne
1994
Very Limited Edition 20/20

The work plays on the 20th century commodification and industrialization
of our mealtime.
Payne juxtaposes layers of meaning and materials to derive humor from the
detritus of harsh, often unforgiving world.
Humor dominates the outward appearance of things,
while a macabre quirkiness is evident at the level of unconscious apprehension.

In 1989 Payne had residency in Omaha, Nebraska at the Bemis Foundation.  Omaha happens to be the home of Swanson the TV dinner company . Payne requested empty TV dinner trays from the company. They agreed, and he used them as the basis for
"The Last Supper."
