For fireplaces that have an opening in the floor to dispose of ashes, a cast iron or steel cover is necessary to keep this opening covered. We have 4 different size covers for different size openings listed on eBay. Check them out, if this one does not look like it will work. Even then, you may find an opening a little too big for the ash dump door. In that case buy a small container of high-temp refractory or furnace cement and trowel a bit around the perimeter of the opening and squeeze the frame of the door into it, letting it dry before using it. Or if the opening is a little too small, you can chisel a little brick off on a side where it is too tight about a half inch deep. Don't worry about making a smooth line, as the frame will overlap the edge. Again you can apply a little refractory or furnace cement, if the fit is a little loose
This 4" x 8" ash dump door is constructed of 16 gauge stainless steel and fits a slightly smaller opening than the cast iron ash dumps, which are usually 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" (ID). Because of the wide 1" frame, though, the maximum ash dump opening it will cover is 6" x 10" due to its 6 1/4" x 10 1/4" exterior, making it more versatile. It features a close to center pivot door, so the homeowner can use their fireplace tools to open and close them by pushing on the rear section. Because it is hinged, though the door will not fall out of the frame.
