Masuo Hara Japan's top metal casting artist
Director ofNitten Exhibition Niigata Intangible Cultural Property Holder 1952 he began to study metal
crafting under Kitahara Sankei, a prominent member of the Nitten exhibitions
and former president of the Japan Art Crafts Association. 1957 at the Nitten Exhibition,
Masuo won his first major award. 1961 Masuo became a member of the
Gendai Kogei bijutsuka kyokai (Modern Art Crafts Artists Association) 1963 he received an award from the Niigata Prefectural
Art exhibitions.
He received many awards in the latter half of his
career, including two from the Japanese government (the prestigious ‘Prime Minister Award’, and the
‘Ministry of Education and Science Award’).

Exhibition The Nitten Exhibition
is the most esteemed art organization in Japan, featuring the top artists from
across the country who showcase their works in the annual exhibition. It was founded in 1907 by
the Japanese Imperial Ministry of Education as the Bunten show, later renamed
to Teiten, and after the reorganization of the Imperial Art Academy in 1937, it
became known as the Nitten show. Today, it remains the most renowned and
prestigious art exhibition in Japan, promoting the arts and culture of the
country.
