Perry Rhodan

Perry Rhodan is a German science fiction series which has appeared in the form of weekly issues since 1961.

Originally intended to last between 30 and 50 issues, Perry Rhodan has established itself over the decades as the largest and most enduring science fiction series, with more than a billion volumes sold in Germany. It is now available on numerous media such as audio books, figurines, posters, etc.

The series is divided into cycles ranging from thirty to one hundred episodes, making it easy to pick up along the way. In Germany, publication reached 2900e volume the , marking the beginning of 41e cycle called Genesis.

This series tells the epic tale of an astronaut fromU.S. Air Force who goes on reconnaissance to the Moon. He then finds an alien ship there. The beings on this ship are Arkonides who need medical help. Rhodan takes Krest, the sick Arkonid, to Earth. In return, the Arkonides give Rhodan, as well as his friend Reginald Bull, the knowledge and technology acquired by these people.

Rhodan, upon his return to Earth, refuses to favor one of the opposing blocs (China, USSR and the United States – during the first publications of Rhodan in 1961, we were in full swing Cold War) by handing over the new technologies revealed by the Arkonides.

He creates in the Gobi desert an independent territory: the “Third Force”, which ended the Cold War during an attempted invasion of Earth by extraterrestrials and unified the peoples of Earth. He also created the Mutant Militia in 1971. Pushed by the Arkonides, eager to return to their homeland, he travels the galaxy and discovers new planets, including one inhabited by the Immortal, where, initially, he becomes a "relative immortal" to the extent that he must pass under a “cellular shower” every 60 years to maintain his immortality and physical means. Thus, he leads the people of Earth (the Earthlings) towards a galactic future and forms the “Solar Empire”.

With each cycle, a new threat arises, confronting Perry Rhodan with ever darker and more dangerous mysteries to solve.

The BASIS association entirely dedicated to the series offers a quarterly fanzine as well as various ancillary publications including numerous stories set in the abundant universe of Perry Rhodan.

Another fanzine, LES CHRONIQUES DE DELOS, offers in each issue a summary of each book with the exact references to the original texts, but also the summary of the episodes which were omitted by the French translation, as well as chronological markers.
