Illustration Entrance to the port la Joliette - Portfolio Marseille and its coastline (N°13)

Illustration from the Portfolio: Marseille and its coastline.

The coastline of Marseille at the beginning of the 19th century was still largely that of previous centuries. Nestled between the Nerthe and Marseille massifs, Veyvre alternates between beach and rock. The documents presented here illustrate some of the transformations carried out almost a century ago, and we can recognize certain buildings that still exist although ignored.

Pencil and pen, anonymous English, Mars 10, 1877.

The drawing was made from the shore at the foot of the imperial castle, in the cove of the reserve; In front, on a wooden deck, a few people chat, behind, fishing boats and sailboats leave the port near Fort Saint-Jean and the Sainte-Marie lighthouse.
