Floréal - Armand Silvestre (Librairie Charles Delagrave) [s.d. (fine '800)]
Description:
Tasteful late 19th century edition of this novel, published in 1891, embellished with a sumptuous binding and splendidly illustrated by numerous heliogravures n.t. and f.t. in black / white, blue, green, red, mauve and sepia. Present the facsimile reproductions of the two scores by Massenet, then printed at the end of the volume. Our copy bears the indication: Exemplaire imprimé spécialement pour Mademoiselle Sybil Sanderson (defined, with a handwritten indication, Marraine (godmother) de Floréal) with autograph dedications of an unspecified Iscovesco (which brings to mind the famous portrait by Renoir to Madame Iscovesco), by illustrator George Cain, by Armand Silvestre and by the publisher Charles Delagrave. Sybil Sanderson was a famous soprano of American origin among the favorite interpreters of Jules Massenet, the author of the two novels present in the volume. The volume, as evidenced by the beautiful Ex Libris of Prince Constantin Radziwill, comes from the library of the Chateau d'Ermenonville, historic home of the Marquis De Girardin family, famous for being the scene of the death of the philosopher Rousseau, who was later buried in the castle park; sold at auction on October 8, 1878, it was bought by Marie-Charlotte Hensel, widow of the wealthy businessman Francois Blanc, and given as a dowry to his daughter Louise, wife of our Prince Constantin Radziwill. The couple's son, Leon, was a friend of Marcel Proust and the main model for the figure of Robert de Saint-Loup in the Recherche.

Elegant full leather binding: the plates are framed by a very rich and elaborate floral frieze, reproduced in its motifs on the back with 5 nerves, which bears the title in gold, and on the counter plates; binding in good condition: some very light peeling near the headphones and some slight signs of pressure and discoloration on the plates. Traces of dust to the cuts. On the counterplate label with Ex Libris of Prince Constantin Radziwill with noble coat of arms. Slightly burnished cards with flourishes, especially on the first and last cards.
