1970 was the year that Paul McCartney announced that the Beatles would be breaking up causing heartbreak and consternation from its legion of loyal fans. 

This was also the year that guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died. Considered to be one of the most innovative guitarists of all time he was responsible for such classics as ‘Voodoo Child’, ‘Little Wing’ and ‘All along the Watchtower’.

-The first passenger Boeing 747 flight, which started in the United States flew to London.

-The Supremes including lead singer Diana Ross took to the stage in Las Vegas for a farewell concert.

-President Richard Nixon kickstarted the legislative environmental movement.

-The Chicago Seven were found not guilty.

-President Nixon cut spending on the space program. He instead focussed spending on welfare, looking after millions of Americans who were living in poverty

-The hugely popular book ‘Love Story’ by Erich Segal was first published followed by a movie of the same name.
