The harp has been used as a political symbol of Ireland for centuries. Its origin is from the time of the famous High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, who played the harp.  The Irish Free State has used a harp as its state symbol since 1922, which was based on the harp in the Library of Trinity College in Dublin.  The harp also appears on Irish coins from the Middle Ages to the current Irish euro coins.
