Crimea - A History in 8 Coins Boxed Collection From Ancient To Modern w COA

Founded by Batu Khan in 1238, Qirim became the provincial capital of the Golden Horde on the Tauric peninsula. The Genoese, with Black Sea settlements in Kerch and Feodosia, pronounced "Qirim" with an Italian accent, leading to the name Crimea. During the siege of Kaffa in the 14th century, the Mongols, facing the Genoese for control, catapulted plague-infected corpses over city walls, causing the terrified Genoese to flee. By 1347, Crimea had seen various rulers, including Persians, Scythians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Trebizond Empire, Venetians, and Kievan Rus', eventually falling under Ottoman, Russian, Soviet, Nazi, and Soviet rule before returning to Ukraine in 1954. The Crimean War in the mid-19th century involved the British and French. Today, Crimea is a contested region as Ukraine resists Russian occupation. The history of Crimea is illustrated through a collection of coins from different eras and rulers.
