The Caerleon Edition of the Works of Arthur Machen. Published by Martin Secker, London, 1923. Complete set of nine volumes numbered 669 of 1,000 limited edition. Volume I is signed by Arthur Machen.
Half leather binding. Near fine set. The rich russet coloured leather is unfaded, with few signs of wear. Each volume has five raised bands to the spine with gilt decorative tooling, and the titles, also in gilt, are in two compartments. The upper and lower boards are covered in russet coloured cloth, with a slubbed linen effect, which is very attractive. The top edge of the text block is gilt, and this is still lustrous and bright. Although I have been unable to find any stamps or labels to the effect, when my husband originally purchased this set, about 35 years ago, from Foyle's, he was informed that the binding was by the very highly regarded Rivieres. The quality of the binding certainly supports that. Throughout the set, there are pages that are unopened, so a sharp knife and a steady nerve will be required if one wishes to read them! There is a tissue guarded photograph of Machen as a frontispiece in volume I. All volumes have very attractive, vibrant marbled end papers.

Volume I: The Great God Pan, The Inmost Light, The Red Hand
Volume II: The Three Imposters
Volume III: The Hill of Dreams
Volume IV: The Secret Glory
Volume V: Hieroglyphics
Volume VI: A Fragment of Life, The White People.
Volume VII: The Terror, The Bowmen, The Great Return
Volume VIII: Far Off Things
Volume IX: Things Near And Far

As mentioned above, my husband bought these about 35 years ago. We were recently married, and it was at that point I realised how keen a collector he was, as we were very hard up, and he paid far more for them than we could afford! They were, however, the cornerstone of his collection. They have always been kept behind glass out of sunlight or any other strong source of light.
I realise that anyone interested in these will doubtless have further questions, or may require further images. I will, of course, be happy to oblige.

All the books which I list are from our own private collection, which is extensive as my husband has been collecting since the 1950s. As you will see from my feedback, I am very keen that all buyers are happy with their purchases. I give as much information as possible about the condition of books, although the best impression can be gleaned from the photos, which are usually scans, as I believe this gives the clearest image. In descriptions I tend to err on the side of being critical, so items might sound worse than they are! This is to avoid anyone being disappointed.
Being married to an avid collector, I realise how very important the condition of books is, and so I take care to pack all books securely to ensure that they arrive in the same state that they leave me.
If you would like any further information about my listings or would like more images, please ask, and I will do my best to help.
I send items in the UK by Royal Mail. Overseas buyers can opt for Ebay Global Shipping Programme. Postage is charged at cost. Please note that the costs of the Global Shipping Programme are determined by that service provider, not by the seller. I regret that I do not send items abroad using other couriers. I post in the morning on Mondays and Thursdays. And, of course, I am happy to combine postage. Please enquire.
