Description

A very rare Amateur Boxing Association Official's Medal from the 2nd British Empire Games (nowadays the Commonwealth Games), held in London in 1934. This is the only example I have ever seen of this medal. I would say that it was in extremely fine (EF) condition or thereabouts, with no damage to the enamelling, but please take a good look at my photos and form your own opinion. The ribbon is also in good condition, if just a little dirty. There is no case.

Made from Gold-plated Bronze with red, white and blue enamelling, Diameter 27 mm, Weight (incl. ribbon and bar) 11.8 grams. Medallists F Phillips of Aldershot.

The front / obverse design has the British (Union) flag enamelled in red, white and blue. Above is the legend "AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION" and underneath is a scroll decorated with a lion's head and the words "BRITISH EMPIRE / GAMES 1934". The reverse is plain apart from the medallist's details inscribed in small script at the base. The bar at the top of the pale blue ribbon reads "OFFICIAL".

500 competitors from 16 nations competed in 6 sports at the London Games. Six of the eight boxing competitions were won by English boxers. Further details can be found on Wikipedia and also the Commonwealth Games Federation's website.
