This phone is a Volvo special edition which began to be manufactured in 1989 by Ericsson AB for Volvo.
Ericsson Hotline is one of the most iconic mobile phones series ever developed.

This phone probably hasn't been used very much, it's in exceptionally good condition.
The telephone cord, like many rubber cords from the 80s, has started to crack and fall off, but this particular model is easy to replace.
Because it is not allowed to send old NiCad batteries by air freight, all batteries have been removed.
The pictures clearly show that the phone starts up and that the screen lights up as it should, the number I have entered is the same as the serial number on the radio unit.

HOTLINE HISTORY:
So why were these phones Hotline instead of Ericsson? Well, the idea was that Ericsson was a too bad brand and this product needed a cooler name than if it were to be an international hit. It was then discovered that Hotline was cool enough and thanks to a smart advertising campaign, Hotline managed to be a real success. However, it did not take many years before Ericsson abandoned this name, and instead, manufactured mobile phones with their own name started. The reason was that the Hotline name no longer worked, but the reason was a lost rights battle when another Swedish company had registered the Hotline brand before Ericsson. However, it turned out that Ericsson worked very well and the company quickly became big internationally under its own name, but with GSM phones instead of Hotline's NMT technology.

THE LEGEND HARRY HOTLINE:
What made Hotline an international phenomenon was the very smart advertising campaign that Ericsson started. In the advertising campaign, Harry Hotline, an adventurous yuppie, was shown that Hotline was able to use throughout the world and in all sorts of situations. Special Hotline stores around the world also opened specially trained staff whose task was to persuade people about how good a Hotline was and that they really needed one. All of this worked well, but the controversy about the name, the transition to GSM networks, etc., ended up too much and in the early 90's, the Hotline series was abandoned.

HotLine products were initially heavy things like HotLine Combi, a phone with a weight of 4 kilograms and a price of 30.000 SEK (£ 2700) in the present value. The first 900A model was based on a Panasonic radio and chassis, but the successor 900B was a pure Ericsson product. The code name for the project was Bessy. In 1989 came a second generation called 900B (project name Bessy2). For the 450 MHz band, a look-to-look identical phone with designation 450C was developed under the project name Lärkan. The phones were called NMT combo phones or anglized combi because they could be used in a car or carried with. The phones were in Sweden for sale with the model designation NH900 for the 900 MHz band's NMT and NH450 for the 450 MHz band.

Combilinjen was replaced with the products in Nils Rydbeck's planned mobile series, the first of which received the project name 900C, or Curt. The product name was HotLine 900 Pocket. This was developed for the NMT 900 band and the first "pocketphonen" in the Swedish market. The electronics were based on a handheld police radio called P300 Maxicom for the System Radio System 80 and contained 7 circuit boards. It was introduced on the market in autumn 1987 and cost about 30.000 SEK (£ 2700).

In 1989, the NH 72 phone was launched, internally called Olivia (the name was taken after a daughter of a friend of Michael Kornby, who was then in the management team), with three PCB cards and 420 grams. It was launched at Sheraton hotel in Malmo where Flemming posed as Harry Hotline in a skim bath wearing only the phone in his hand.

In 1988, work began on a new mobile phone platform with the code name Sandra (the name was taken after the daughter of Jan Johansson who led Ericsson's microchip strategy). This was intended to include electronics, mechanics and software to handle both NMT, ETACS and the new GSM standard. The first phone that used this platform was NH 97 for the NMT network, in 1991. It was followed in 1992 by EH 97 for ETACS and finally in 1993 GH 197 for the GSM network.
