On offer is an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "A MAP of Dorsetshire from the best AUTHORITIES.", from the Gough edition of Camden's Britannia.  The map has early outline colour.

DATE PRINTED: 1805, dated on the map. 

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 20.75 x 15 inches (52.5 by 38 cms) with 2 folds as issued.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Drawn by John Cary. John Cary (1755-1835) was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher, working between 1787 and 1834 in London. Cary’s publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps.

PROVENANCE:  Published in 'Britannia: or, a chorographical description of the flourishing kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland, and the islands adjacent; from the earliest antiquity', by William Camden expanded and updated by Gough in 1789. Here from the 1806 re-issue.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.
