1691 HOROLOGY Geometry Clocks Sun
DIALS Illustrated Cistercian Monk Madelaine
Pierre de Madelaine’s “Treatise on
Horlogiography” is a rare 17th-century history of horology.
First published in 1641, this work was written to describe horology through the
lens of geometry – a purely mathematical approach to horology. Madelaine, a
Cistercian monk and part of the Fueuillants Congregation, included numerous
impressive engravings throughout his book – illustrations that depict the
instruments used in the practice and study of horology including sundials,
clocks, geometric figures, and descriptions on the behavior of the moon.
