school, 19th century. "St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk". On hard
wooden board - panel, Hand painted with EGG TEMPERA on chalk ground, with
magnificent Christian art, painting, wood art writing. Looks like over all good
condition considering the age. Moscow 1880-1900 years.

This icon, painted in tempera on
chalk ground on wood panel with two side SPONKI (lost
sponki). Church holy icon painting reproduces the hidden motifs of the
painting, depicts the 'St. Nicholas', an icon that can be seen in every
Orthodox temple. It shows St. Nicholas in a robe and mantle. St. Nicholas also
wears a rich halo, symbolizing a supernatural divine light. This halo or
nimbus, always present in icons, divine and human. The anonymous artist of the
icon depicts the face of St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk as similar to a human
face. The halo above this realistic face conveys that St. Nicholas of
Mozhaysk is "fully Holy man in his divinity".

The Icon "St.
Nicholas the Wonderworker of Mozhaisk" this iconographic type created
on Russian soil, was inspired by specific historical events. On it the saint is
depicted in full growth. In one hand is a sword, in the other a miniature city.
Such an image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of the World of Lycia,
began to be venerated in memory of the miraculous salvation of Mozhaisk from
enemy attacks.
According to legend, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of
Mozhaisk was saved during the
Tatar-Mongol invasion. When the city was besieged by enemies, the inhabitants
began to pray to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Suddenly, a formidable image of
the saint appeared in the sky with a sword raised with a blade up in one hand
and the city he defended in the other. Enemies fled in fear, the siege of the
city was lifted.
Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker of Mozhaisk is painted
in episcopal robes. He wears a green vestment adorned with ornamented light
circles and a yellow border embroidered with precious stones. A bright red
phelonion is worn on top - the liturgical vestments of a priest and a wide
white omophorion with black crosses. From under the omophorion, a
grayish-silvery stole with multi-colored tassels is visible - a long ribbon of
an Orthodox priest and bishop, part of the vestment, without which it is impossible
to perform rites. On the right side, the
icon painter depicted a red club with a yellow edging, decorated with tassels
in the corners and with a white ornament in the center.
