A broken connecting rod tore the engine apart, and local driver, Joe Dawson and riding mechanic Harry Martin won the race in their National Motor Vehicle Company entry. De Palma and Jeffkins drew great cheers from a crowd of 80,000 spectators at this second running of the 500-mile race.
The scene was painted for Esquire in 1945 and the print published by the L. P. Auto Museum in Southampton, NY.
Print measures approximately 23 1/2" x 18 1/4" (61cm x 20cm). Very good condition with a clean, bright print surface, and marks from handling in the borders. See photos.
