Antique French Paul Milet Sèvres ceramic jardinière, centerpiece bowl. Mounted with sterling silver rim and footed base. The body features a glazed blue and white pastoral landscape, with a chapel and chateau beside by a lake. Signed by Milet collaborator E. Roger. Marked for Paul Milet and Sevres, this mark was in use circa 1911. The silver mount is hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark used from 1838, which depicts the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to denote a silver content of .950/1000. Bearing maker's mark for silversmith Charles Barrier, active 1905-1923 at 7 rue Reaumur, Paris. In overall good condition with general wear commensurate with age. Measures 9 1/2" length x 6" width x 5 1/4" height, with a 7 1/8" x 3 3/4" oval opening. Optat Milet began his career as a modeler for Sèvres in 1862, and opened his own ceramics factory in 1866. His son Paul Jean Milet took over operations shortly before the turn of the century and ran the company until 1931.
