The Duchess of Malfi is a Jacobean revenge tragedy written by English dramatist John Webster in 1612–1613.[1] First performed privately at the Blackfriars Theatre, then later at The Globe, in 1613–1614. The White Devil  is loosely based on an event in Italy thirty years prior to the play's composition: the murder of Vittoria Accoramboni in Padua in 1585. Webster's dramatization of this event turned Italian corruption into a vehicle for depicting "the political and moral state of England in his own day particularly the corruption in the royal court.

Condition: In Very good condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean with bright gilt. Pages rough cut to foredge. Occasional Foxing spots but light and limited. The unclipped dust jacket is in very good condition with chips to the top edge and minor loss to top of spine. See photos

Our Opinion: Lovely copy Very rare in DJ. A drive towards realism and satire in English comedy from around 1610 was matched in Jacobean tragedy by an obsession with moral corruption; Malfi and Webster's The White Devil are examples, displaying a cynical and pessimistic outlook on life and people.
